University College at the University of Toronto invites applications for the University College Fellow in Early American History, a one-year part-time (0.50) position (with the possibility of a one-year renewal) at the rank of Assistant Professor, generously funded by a bequest from Madeleine Cummins Meyer. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2025, by which time the successful candidate must hold a Ph.D.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in and commitment to research and teaching in an interdisciplinary environment at the undergraduate level. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

The UC Fellow will be expected to teach one term-long course in early American history for the Department of History in the Faculty of Arts and Science, and one term-long course in Canadian-American relations for University College’s Canadian Studies program, and to conduct an independent research program. In addition, the UC Fellow will be expected to contribute to the University College community by being available to meet with Canadian Studies students and serving as a member of the Canadian Studies Advisory Committee. Opportunities for additional teaching on a stipendiary basis may be available.

The Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto has both a collegiate and departmental structure. University College is the founding college of the University and has a long-standing commitment to challenging its diverse body of over 5,200 undergraduate students to excel intellectually and preparing them to engage in the wider world. Canadian Studies is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program, which includes a minor in Asian Canadian Studies as well as hosting a Certificate in Black Canadian Studies. In addition to Canadian Studies, University College sponsors two other innovative undergraduate programs – Cognitive Science and Health Studies – and is affiliated with the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies, and the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies.

In their curriculum vitae and their research statement, candidates must provide evidence of research excellence, which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, peer-reviewed books, or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, research creation through various media, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and grants, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing. 

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference.
