DUTIES
Research Associate in Parks, Conservation, Tourism and Community Development
A Research Associate is sought to engage in community-based research in the Rural Livelihoods and Sustainable Communities Lab at Thompson Rivers University, Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada (https://courtneymason.sites.tru.ca).
This part time position (25-30hrs per week) if offered for one year (2024-2025) and may be renewed for a longer term (2025-2027). The Associate position will provide opportunities to engage with graduate students and communities on projects in the following areas:
- Parks with a focus on conservation issues. Possible field sites include: British Columbia Provincial Parks and/or newly created Indigenous Protected Areas in Canada;
- Tourism development in rural and Indigenous communities in Canada.
We are hiring a Research Associate to support these projects on the following tasks:
- Engage in community-based research and coordination with rural Indigenous communities.
- Mentor senior undergraduate and graduate students at TRU in the Rural Livelihoods and Sustainable Communities Lab.
- Contribute to funding reporting processes.
- Conduct primary research, interpret results and write manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications on species at risk in BC.
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential Criteria
- A completed MSc in Environmental Science
- A completed J.D., with work experience in Environmental and Public Law
- Expertise in species at risk legislation
- Strong community-based research skills
- Ability to take a leadership role in a multi-disciplinary research team
- Knowledge of diverse qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis techniques
- Strong interpersonal / communication skills
Desirable criteria:
- Experience with mentoring undergraduate and graduate students
- Demonstrated publication record
There is an expectation to work on site in Kamloops, B.C.
The position will have a salary of $50,000-60,000 per year plus full university benefits which include: Medical Services Plan, Extended Medical Services Plan, Dental Plan Insurance, Grouplife Insurance, Accident Death and Dismemberment Insurance, Short Term and Long-Term Disability Benefits, and Pension Plan Enrolment.
All research costs will be covered. Anticipated start date: Fall 2024.
