Sociology - Assistant Professor (French teaching position)

The School of Social Sciences in the Faculty of Arts at Laurentian University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for an existing tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Sociology, required to teach in French. The preferred start date is July 1, 2026.

Candidates must have completed a PhD degree by the start date of the appointment. Relevant teaching and research experience will be an asset.

The successful candidate will possess the following essential qualifications:

• A PhD in Sociology or a related field.
• Demonstrated ability in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses effectively, with a strong commitment to pedagogical and academic excellence, and promoting a safe, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment.
• Extensive experience in teaching core courses in sociology – introduction, theories, and methods.
• Evidence of relevant research and scholarship, with the potential to collaborate with colleagues and build interdisciplinary or intersectoral collaborations within and outside the university.

The selected candidate will be required to:

• Teach in person on campus while actively contributing to student learning within a collegial and cooperative academic environment.
• Actively participate in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, along with a commitment to program development and research.
• Actively involved in the administration of the program and the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.
• Collaborate with faculty in the Criminology and Equity, Diversity and Human Rights programs (the other programs offered by the Sociology unit) with a commitment to promoting a diverse, inclusive, and dynamic academic environment.

While teaching for this position will be conducted in French, preference will be given to bilingual candidates (French and English) or those who possess passive comprehension of English, or who, per articles 3.10 and 5.30 of the LUFA Collective Agreement, can demonstrate knowledge and/or study of an Indigenous language.

Actively engaging in teaching and research, the successful candidate will establish a strong presence on campus, contributing to the School, Faculty, University, and broader community. The candidate will teach in-person as well as advance student learning in curriculum design and program oversight, all within a collegial environment.

The School of Social Sciences offers programs in English and French. Apart from undergraduate programs in Criminology; Economics; Equity, Diversity and Human Rights; Gerontology; Psychology; and Sociology; the School offers an interdisciplinary MA in Relational Studies and a PhD in Human Studies and Interdisciplinarity.
